|
I was born Peter Friedrich Sander in Darmstadt, Germany, to a German mother and father. My mother relinquished me to an orphanage at the age of one. Two years later I was adopted by an American couple, one of about 10,000 German children adopted by American citizens during the 1950s-1970s. My autobiography, Outer Search\Inner Journey: An Orphan and Adoptee's Quest, is the first book written by a foreign born adoptee on the subject of international adoption. As an author, I have been interviewed on television, radio and the Internet. My television appearances include Bay Area Psychology and radio interviews include The World, a news program co-produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation and Public Radio International. My most recent television appearance was on "A Test of Faith" with Canada's Vision TV. My testimony was part of the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearings on S682, the Intercountry Adoption Convention Implementation Act of 1999.
I am an international speaker on issues related to the adoption of children by foreign parents and was the keynote speaker at New Zealand's 1998 National Adoption Conference. That speech, titled "The Case Against International Adoption", is included as part of this website. I am a graduate of the International Olympic Academy (Greece) and also hold B.A. and M.P.A degrees. I have worked as a member of the Washington State Legislative staff, was the Director of an international program for the U.S. Olympic Committee and an elite' Airborne-Ranger when serving as an American Army officer.
